A two-bladed, twin-engine helicopter, the Maverick was manufactured in Canada, but you shouldn't let that put you off. Originally designed for military use, when the army rejected them for looking too 'French', they became hugely popular with rich social climbers for exactly the same reason. Used by law enforcement for surveillance operations, you'll often see them hovering above inner city African American neighborhoods. Billion candlepower spotlight and loudspeaker optional, but trust us, it's fun to play with over poor neighborhoods at night.
Elitás Travel description, GTA Online.

The Maverick is a civilian helicopter appearing in nearly every Grand Theft Auto game since Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and due to appear in Grand Theft Auto VI. It is manufactured by Western Company and Buckingham in the HD Universe.

Description[]

The Maverick is one of the longest-recurring helicopters in the GTA series, appearing in all games since Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, with the exceptions being Grand Theft Auto Advance and Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars. It has remained largely the same, being a traditional helicopter with capacity for four occupants and possessing relatively easy handling.

Design[]

3D Universe[]

Executive helicopter for high rollers, big spenders, and tourists.
GTA Vice City website.

Between Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, the Maverick is based on a Bell 206L-4 LongRanger. It is depicted with a large fuselage, rounded nose and large windows, as well as long skids, tall engine compartment with a two-bladed main rotor, and a long tail boom with the corresponding stabilizers and four-bladed tail rotor. The interior of the aircraft has a bench seat for the rear passengers and two control sticks for the front occupants (although only the left occupant takes control of the vehicle).

All renditions of the Maverick followed an identical color distribution, consisting of a primary color for most of the fuselage and tail boom, and a secondary color in the form of dual stripes at the bottom. In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the skids are painted with the secondary color.

Grand Theft Auto IV[]

In Grand Theft Auto IV, the Maverick retains the overall design from the Bell 206L LongRanger, but features a four-bladed main rotor, similar to the Bell 407.

The Maverick assumes an improved design and various changes, although it still remains similar to the previous renditions. Its fuselage appears to be much taller, and two small windows are added on the roof area, but the sections between the side doors no longer have extra windows. The skids are slightly shorter in height, and small details such as two vented sections and small exhausts are added to the engine compartment. Unlike previous renditions, the Maverick is depicted with sliding rear doors that are always open, and the rear passengers sit on the borders of the rear bay instead of on the rear seats. In addition to the aforementioned difference in rotor design (a two-blade rotor replaced by a four-blade variety), pre-release material also depicts earlier forms of the Maverick as having shut rear doors, as opposed to slid open doors in the final version.

The interior of the aircraft features a small flight instrument panel/console in the center and two control sticks for the front occupants (again with only the left occupant taking control of the aircraft), along with safety warnings.

The aircraft spawns in a white primary color for part of the fuselage and tail boom, with a variety of possible secondary colors applied on part of the skids. The nose of the aircraft bears "MAVERICK" stencils on each side, while the tail boom bears "DJO.250676" stencils.

Grand Theft Auto V and Online[]

The Maverick returns in Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online, looking similar to its previous versions. However, it assumes a two-bladed main rotor like the Bell 206L LongRanger and different skids, similar to the ones from the Eurocopter AS350B.

The model itself is unchanged from GTA IV, but the original skids have been replaced with larger ones complete with steps. The cockpit doors feature small window dividers, while the main and tail rotors have two blades as opposed to four. The helicopter is also fitted with a camera like the Police Maverick (usable by NPCs or players in Grand Theft Auto Online), along with two mounted winches (unusable by the player in Grand Theft Auto V, but usable – to an extent – in Grand Theft Auto Online).

The interior of the aircraft remains identical to its previous rendition, having a small flight instrument panel/console and two control sticks. In the enhanced version, the aircraft uses animated dials to display vital information, such as an altimeter (measured in ft), a compass (adjusted with the in-game compass), an airspeed indicator (measured in knots) and a vertical speed indicator. It also uses an attitude indicator, which denotes the orientation of the aircraft relative to the horizon (which is also adjusted with the in-game indicator on the radar). This set is also used as standard across multiple aircraft.

The original livery design is replaced with a single-paint color design and a permanent livery with silver "MAVERICK" lettering on the engine compartment.

Performance[]

In most GTA games, the Maverick is offered as the first controllable helicopter and usually early in the story of the game, probably because its balanced performance makes it easier to maneuver than other helicopters.

Overall, the Maverick is a good choice of transport, but is unsuitable for combat purposes, since it lacks armor, as well as an own set of weaponry.

3D Universe[]

In the 3D Universe, the Maverick is a short, nimble, basic helicopter. It has a high top speed, forward thrust is acceptable, and its maneuverability is on par with most competitors. Durability is rather slack due to its thin bodywork and overall 'light' design, making it unsuitable for long-time air pursuits or for purposeful crashing, as it can only take several crashes, and a small amount of bullets before it begins to smoke and break down.

The aircraft is powered by a single turboshaft engine.

Grand Theft Auto IV[]

A major improvement in Grand Theft Auto IV, the Maverick returns as a slightly bigger, more durable, and experimental vehicle. The Maverick is even faster and more maneuverable, largely due to the changes to the general handling of both land and air vehicles to GTA IV.

Durability is acceptable for its purpose, and thanks to its bodywork, can still take numerous beatings before it falls out of the sky.

Stability is rather disappointing. Even despite the four-blade design, the helicopter has limited stability and cornering can be very unresponsive, and landing can be more trouble after slowing down or performing a quick turn or maneuver.

Again, the aircraft is powered by a single turboshaft engine.

Grand Theft Auto V and Online[]

The Maverick returns to GTA V and GTA Online with a major upgrade in its handling. Its top speed and take-off capabilities are still the same, however it is more rigid and can maneuver with ease, all despite its downgraded two-blade system. It is also much more durable than the previous renditions; albeit with the exception of high-speed impacts resulting in an instant explosion, a property found on all aircraft in the game.

Like previous renditions, it is powered by a single turboshaft engine.

Prominent Appearances in Missions[]

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City[]

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas[]

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories[]

  • During "Calm Before the Storm", an indestructible Maverick is used as Massimo Torini's mode of transport, sporting a uniquely jet black color with two white stripes. The helicopter can be obtained in the PSP version and some PS2 unpatched versions as the helicopter makes a stopover at Chinatown. Entering the Helicopter will cause the mission to fail after a few minutes in the air, the helicopter being removed from the game, and Toni appearing Wasted in the floor of the city.
  • During "The Passion of the Heist", when a fire-proof Maverick is flown by a gang that stole diamonds. The helicopter can be obtained only in the PSP version of the game, as wrecks cannot be restored in garages in other versions of the game.
  • During "Sayonara Sindaccos", there is a dark Sindacco Maverick nearly at the end of the mission, which is shot down by Toni.
  • During "Caught in the Act", which features a fire-proof, black Maverick flown by the Secret Service.
  • During "False Idols", when a Maverick is used to transport actress Faith W. to the Liberty City Free Radio station. The helicopter is obtainable on some versions of the game, since newer versions have been patched, preventing the player from obtaining the Maverick.
  • During "Cash in Kazuki's Chips", which features a bullet/explosion-proof Maverick belonging to Kazuki Kasen. The helicopter is obtainable.
  • During "The Sicilian Gambit", a Maverick is mobilized during the boat chase; it needs to be destroyed to continue the mission. Massimo's Maverick is later used to launch an assault on the player at the Portland Rock lighthouse, and it has to be shot down. The helicopter is vulnerable to damage and cannot be obtained.

Locations[]

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City[]

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas[]

  • Easter Bay Airport, eastern part, near the Dodo hangars. Oddly, the doors are not locked even without a pilot's license, allowing it to be used if the player can get into the airport.
  • The top of the Los Santos Tower in Downtown Los Santos after completing Learning to Fly. The tower has a star-shaped top. The Maverick may not be there, it spawns more if Carl flies another aerial vehicle to the location.
  • San Fierro Police Headquarters Helipad in Downtown San Fierro after the completion of Learning to Fly.
    • Note: This should only be taken as a last resort, since going behind the gate without a law enforcement vehicle triggers a 3 star wanted level. To avoid it, park a police bike right next to it and then take off as fast as possible, or kill the officer.
  • Bayside Marina helipad (note that a Sea Sparrow can also spawn here after the completion of Learning to Fly, while the Maverick always spawns from the beginning of the game).
  • On the roof of San Fierro Medical Center, Santa Flora, San Fierro after completing Learning to Fly (note that a Raindance also spawns east of here, also requiring the aforementioned mission to make it appear).
  • Located on a helipad at The Emerald Isle after the completion of Learning to Fly (if it does not spawn, walk to the very east of the building and walk back and it should be there).

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories[]

  • The Maverick in Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories is not intended to be obtained by the player. However, it can still be obtained by the player during the missions Calm Before the Storm given by Joseph Daniel O'Toole[1] and False Idols given by Ned Burner[2]. It is unusually fast and can reach high speeds in a matter of three seconds, which is not possible in other games (since it is somewhat scripted to be faster). Moving the camera moves the helicopter (because the right analog stick was used to alternatively control a helicopter in GTA Vice City.) The blades are reused from an AI-controlled Police Maverick, and the blades render transparency incorrectly (e.g. with trees).

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories[]

Grand Theft Auto IV[]

Grand Theft Auto V[]

  • Available for purchase on Elitás Travel for $1,100,000. Spawns in black and white colors.
  • Green variants are used by most pilots in parachuting locations marked around the map, like the one in La Puerta. Tapping the enter button near it will make the character enter the back and go for the parachute jump, but holding the button will make the character hijack the helicopter.

Grand Theft Auto Online[]

Video[]

Trivia[]

General[]

  • The Maverick plays the following radio stations by default when entered:
  • The name of the Maverick may be a reference to the 1986 film Top Gun, as Maverick is the callsign of the main character, and the whole film is about flying.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City[]

  • If the player scrapes the landing gear of the Maverick on any surface, they will see tire marks.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas[]

  • The blades of the helicopter do not show frames when they are rotating in all versions, except for the PS2 version.
  • In the Definitive Edition, the Maverick is essentially a Police Maverick without the police decals.
  • Although not one of the largest in the game, the Maverick is among the aircraft with the highest passenger capacity.

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories[]

  • Just like in GTA Vice City, scraping the landing gear of the Maverick on any surface leads to the appearance of tire marks.
  • In the mobile version, if Toni somehow goes near to a Maverick, the "entering a Maverick" button will appear, even though the Maverick was an unfinished vehicle during the development of the game.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories[]

  • The doors of the Maverick cannot be closed if Victor comes out. However, when Victor comes out of the Maverick while in midair, the doors will remain closed.
  • This rendition emits door opening/closing noises similar to the Police Maverick, while other renditions have "heavy" door noises similar to large trucks like the Barracks OL, Linerunner, and the Flatbed.
  • The Maverick is the last vehicle seen in the game, hence making it the last vehicle non-chronologically shown in the 3D Universe.

Grand Theft Auto IV[]

  • Pre-release material, such as TV footage, suggests the Maverick was originally intended to retain its two-bladed rotor, along with basic opening rear doors.
  • While taking a ride in Brucie's helicopter, there is a very small sticker on the instrument panel of the helicopter that reads "This helicopter might crash. But we don't really care if it does. Refer to flight manual for help." The helicopter of Helitour does not have this message.
  • All Mavericks have the text "DJO 250676" written on their tail.

Grand Theft Auto V[]

  • The Maverick is one of the few vehicles that underwent manufacturer change throughout the HD Universe, with it being Western Company branded in GTA IV, and manufactured by Buckingham in GTA V.
    • In a Rockstar Newswire article, the Maverick is regarded as a Western Company vehicle. It's unclear whether this is intentional or not.[3]
  • The Maverick has an incorrect updated image on GTA V Rockstar Games Social Club, showing the Police Maverick. This error doesn't appear in GTA Online Rockstar Games Social Club.

Grand Theft Auto Online[]

  • If the player calls Merryweather to pick the player up, they have the ability to use the winch to rappel off the helicopter if the player puts the GPS waypoint on top of certain highrise buildings, like the FIB Headquarters or simple apartment buildings, or onto some ground-level areas (mainly beaches).
  • The Elitas Travel description refers to the Maverick as being built in Canada and as being "too French" for the United States Armed Forces. This is a reference to the fact that the Bell JetRanger, the helicopter on which the Maverick is based, is manufactured at Bell Helicopter's Quebec Plant.
